With Diddy’s girl band, Danity Kane, being dismantled the title for the best girl band is up for grabs…And some of your favorite producers and artists are taking advantage of the vacancy…

Electrik Red

Beginning their individual careers in music as background dancers, Kyndra “Binkie” Reevey, Lesley Lewis, Naomi Allen, and Sarah Rosete make up the group formed by The Dream and Tricky Steward, called Electrik Red. Signed to Def Jam just last year, the group previously worked as dancers for the likes of Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Ludacris and Chris Brown until they were set to audition for L.A. Reid after shooting The Dream’s Shawty is A Ten video back in 2007 and were co-signed with The Dream and Trickey Stewart’s Radio Killa Records. The Group is set to release their first album, How to Be Lady Vol. 1 on April 21st of this year. So far they have already released 3 singles – Drink in My Cup, So Good featuring Lil Wayne, and Friend Lover. Electrik Red pushes the envolope in terms of lyrics, not afraid to be different from most girl groups of the past. Not your typical single but a great song, We F*ck You, displays this as the group sings about being the dominant player in the relationship. You can also tell of The Dream & Tricky Stewart’s musical influence on this group in lyrics and production. This is not your typical girl group – they will surprise you with their lyrics and look…

Sophia Fresh

Signed by another super power in hip hop and R&B – T-Pain, Sophia Fresh is a three girl group consisting of Cole Rose, Crystal Dawson and Skye. Skye and Cole Rose began their careers signed with J Records, gaining some early experience in the music business while Crystal persued other routes in entertainment, including being the captain of the Houston Texans cheerleading squad. The 3 were eventually reunited when they were signed with Nappy Boy Records with the Grammy Nomiated and Multi-Platinum, T-Pain, as the Executive Producer of their current project set to feature hip hop anthem and ballads. Definitely influenced by the southern style of T-Pain’s, this group is set up to set their own pace in hip hop and R&B. The three of them truly come together to produce a sound that was similar to the times of 702 or 3LW but in a more modern style. With an album set to be released sometime this year this group has already produced 2 singles – What It Is featuring Kanye West and Super Bad featuring Cee-Lo & T-Pain. With a vacancy as the top female group, can T-Pain make his style and sound which has produced multi-platinum albums work for Sophia Fresh?

I think that both groups need some polishing but I think that Electrik Red has more star power than Sophia Fresh. I’m digging ER’s style a bit more than SF, which has a bit of a bubblegum pop look despite their lyrics. The vocal abilities are pretty nonimpressive on both ends but I would like to see some production from other producers to really see what they have to offer. They’re both sounding like their proteges.
