Ocean's 7 Mixtape – 3000 and 9 Sh*t

Published on June 2nd, 2009

While I was on blog-hiatus I heard a lot going around about the Ocean’s 7 Mixtape so I decided to take a listen for myself as I put the headphones back on today.

The Ocean’s Seven composed of Jermaine “JD” Dupri, Nelly, Usher, Bryan Michael Cox, Trey Songz, Johnta Austin, and Tyrone Davis is a modern day conglomerate of new and old stars in hip hop and R&B making a star-studded collaboration. The group originally started as a trio with JD, B.Cox, and Usher while working on Usher’s upcoming album and drew the attention of the rest of the members – Nelly, Trey Songz (007-11), Johnta Austin, and Tyrone Davis. Somewhat of a modern day Rat Pack, these 7 stars put together this mixtape which came out last week.

This mixtape is a great blend of hip hop and R&B at its finest. Trey Songz definitely goes hard on each track he his featured, as well as Johnta Austin and Tyrone David (never heard of him previously) as Nelly, JD, Usher, and B.Cox more along fill in where necessary. JD did a crazy sample of Kanye’s “Owe Me Sex” lyric from Put on For My City into a song, and also samples Kanye’s Amazing, and Kid Cudi’s Day N’ Nite for tracks. With features Bow Wow and Q Da Kid, JD successfully puts out a short but strong mixtape to bring his super crew of singers and producers to the forefront.
