“Honey check it….. You tell your friends to get with my friends, and we can be friends”
It’s only right to make this week’s “Throwback Thursday” about one of rap’s greats and arguably the best to ever do it ( although Lil Wayne and Jay-Z may disagree). Two days after the anniversary of Notorious B.I.G.’s death I felt compelled to present to you the one “who stayed Coogi down to the socks and kept his rings and watch filled with rocks.” A lyrical wordsmith that somehow seemed to effortlessly put out hit after hit all the while making obesity seem cool and his delivery so smooth.
I couldn’t think of another that song that portrayed this better. “Big Poppa”, with the help of another Isley Brother’s sample and numerous ad-libs from Puff made for a song that not only made the ladies want to groove, but basically coached guys on how to get the girl. It is truly a playa’s anthem. He exuded confidence not only with his lyrics but also through his actions. This is “for all the honies gettin’ money playing fellas like dummies” and “all the true playas who put their hands in the air” (everytime they hear this song at least).
