This Saturday, May 28th, Chicago’s own GLC will be performing live at Reggie’s Rock Club along with Rockie Fresh, Mikkey Halsted, YP, Sulaiman, and the lineup’s latest addition, Mickey Factz! Must be 18+ to enter and 21+ to drink. You can purchase advance tickets here for $10 or pay $12 at the door. It feels really good to be a Chicagoan right now. For years, the city has been stuck in musical purgatory. Sure, there’s been plenty of talent to emerge from the city, but it happened sporadically, and there was never a real movement for the city like there’s been for Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Houston. In 2010 alone, we’ve had so many talented artists emerge from the shadows that it’s not even funny. And…get this, they’re all united, and they get along. Finally. Chicago gets it. This is not a game.

To help cap off a banner year for the Windy City, Rockie Fresh comes through with his sophomore effort, The Otherside, produced entirely by The Cartoonz, this 12-track opus shows the promise of this 19-year old upstart. With a supporting cast of Mike Golden, Naledge, Phil Ade, Rich Hil, Imogen Heap and Mr. Hudson, one would think that it’d be easy for him to get upstaged, but no such thing happens here. While each guest adds some flair, this is clearly Rockie’s show.

“A.C. Green” kicks the LP off on a dark note, but Rockie wastes no time proving he’s no slouch on the mic. The cinematic backdrop from The Cartoonz sets Rockie up to deliver lines like, “Think I need an intervention, drunk off these punchlines/serial killing tracks, bitch/I’m the captain of crunch time.”

“Living” should be specifically noted because, well, simply put, the song is a hit. There’s nothing else to say about it. Naledge and Phil Ade showed up and showed out, while Rockie anchored it. “As Far As They Let Me” is sure to be another favorite…while not entirely an original vibe, it’s still very enjoyable.

“They Don’t Understand Why” will be a fave among listeners as well, with its catchy hook and bouncy track. “Too Far” is a tale about a love interest that recognizes Rockie’s potential to be a star, but because of that, she can’t be his lover. The production on this track, as well as “What’s the Hurry” is very alternative-influenced, but it works for Rockie. The guitar-laden title track is a promise that he’s about to “make it Big/no pun intended.”

The Otherside is a solid effort, and further proof that Hip-Hop isn’t dead…she just packed her shit and moved to Chicago.

Our good friend Hustle Simmons is throwing the latest edition of his Hustlepalooza concert series this Halloween (Sunday Oct. 31st) at The Wild Hare right here in Chicago!

Hustlepalooza Halloween Edition featuring Lil’ B the Based God will take place on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at Wild Hare 3530 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60657.

Hustlepalooza is a traveling hip- hop showcase that allows fans to become a part of the tremendous momentum that precedes national stardom. Hustlepalooza has hosted live shows in major cities nationwide which have featured the industry’s most trendsetting new acts.

Hustlepalooza Halloween Edition is hosted by Naledge and will feature a special headlining performance by Lil’B the Based God in addition to local and national talent such as Phil Ade, Black Orchard, The Basix, Rockie Fresh, Vyle, SG, and Prez.

The event, presented by Hustle Simmons, 368 Music Group, and Grossinger City Scion, is open to everyone ages 17+.  Doors Open at 8:00pm.

Surprisingly Jay-Z blesses the crowds with the Intro from The Dynasty: Roc La Familia 2000 with a rock twist to it. This is what he should be doing more often in concert. I would be the first in line to buy a “nothing but Jay-Z Intro’s” CD. Check out the rest where he performs more current joints too.

So the time has come…In collaboration with the Work.Grind.Progress Movement we’re finally dropping our first mixtape (cover album/tracklisting coming soon…) but we also wanted to celebrate the release and showcase some of the artists that will be on the tape. Make sure you come out to Dragonfly on June 27th to see live performances from YP, Add-2, Neak, Que Billah, Andrew Davis, R.O.E. and will be hosted by our homie Hustle Simmons…It is sure to be a great night of hip hop with some good people in the building…Grab your tickets early here!
